Because Canadian farmers were exempted from military service during WWII, the Mutzeneek men stayed in Lake Isle. Fuel shortages during World War II were managed by conserving gasoline at home. Gasoline ration cards were used by families across Canada. The Mutzeneek family of Lake Isle, Alberta saved these samples.
Silver "sakta" used to fasten a scarf or shawl as part of the traditional Latvian costume. These brooches are decorated with the rope braid motif, fruits and flowers.
Latvian weaving adorns the home of ethnic Latvian and Edmonton resident Ilda Lubane. The yellow design is the traditional motif of Jumis, the pagan god of fertility. The intertwined shape represents two trees that have grown together.

James Lapin was the first born son of George and Minnie Lapin. He was the older brother of Cecelia and George H. Lapin and the father of Jack and Irma Lapin. James Lapin was born in 1900 near Riga Latvia. It is believed that he emigrated to the area west of Edmonton, Alberta Canada with his mother Minnie and sister Cecelia in approximately 1910 at the age of 10. His sister Cecelia was 7 at that time.
