The remaining wild flock of the rare whooping crane divides its year about equally between Canada and the United States. In Canada, they are protected by man and nature so that few Canadians even get to see them. In Texas, in their other life, the whooping cranes inhabit wintering grounds which are besieged by industry, by dangerous tanker traffic, and by hordes of gawking tourists.
