Dry toilets may well spread to apartment houses in the future. This idea has been under de- velopment for the last two years at the Department of General Microbiology in the University of Helsinki, where a prototype is already working. Associate professor Mirja Salkinoja-Salonen _ explains that they have studied what would happen if domestic waste water from toilets were not discharged into the sewer- age system. Measurements have shown that half of the phosphorus leading to the eu- trophication of waterways and close on 90 per cent of the nitrogen would be eliminated. In addition, as much as 80 per cent of the oxygen-reducing ef- Joint manufacture by Finland and the USSR of Pulse Code Modulation digital speech transmission systems — PCM s — has been given the go ahead. Agreement has been reached by the Finnish firm Nokia Telecommunications division and the Soviet minis- try of communications. In early October Nokia signed a deal worth Fmks 100 million with the Soviet Union for manufacture of the system. The deal includes delivery of about 300 30 channel digital PCM systems to the Soviet Union next year. Part of the equipment will be built in the Soviet Union while final assembly and completion will take place at Nokia tele- communications factory in Finland. As a follow up, both parties intend to concentrate on third country marketing. Teleno- kia’s managing director Sakari Salminen believes the smaller Comecon countries will be the first targets but there is also interest in several Afncan and Asian countries too. 0.D OPTOMETRISTIT Puh. konttori 674-4014 kotiin 673-0705 CITY CENTRE, HUONE 216 Toisessa kerrolsessa SUDBURY, Ontario Vastaanotto ESPANOLASSA Heskiv. klo 11 ap. — 9 ip. Organic substances are real delicacies for bacteria, and when they devour these sub- stances, they also consume ox- ygen. One gram of organic matter can deoxygenize 100 litres of water, Salkinoja-Salonen compares this new concept with the cur- rent situation where domestic wastewater containing human excreta is purified at the sew- age plant before being dis- charged back into the environ- ment. This “purified” water is actually dirtier than waste- water without the waste from toilets. The Association for the Advancement of Scandinavian Studies in Canada (AASSC) is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Scandinavian-Canadian Studies 4s a part of its programme to promote and encourage the development of Scandinavian studies in all fields and disciplines in this country. This volume of Scandinavian-Canadian Studies features sixteen essays devoted to the Study of the Scandinavian presence in Canada, the world-at-large, and Scandinavia proper. Written from the perspective of a panoply of disci- plines by authors who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields of endeavour in this Country and abroad, these essays present an altogether fascinating glimpse to the reader of the work that has been done to eMhance our understanding of the Scandinavian experience—be that experience in the dimmed recesses of the ancient past or in the glare of the contemporary scene, and that which obtains not only to Scandinavia itself, but also to such widely seperated regions as Canada’s west coast and China’s eastern shores. 185 pp. (approx). 177us. $15.00 ($10.00 members) $2.00 per volume for postage & handling. An apartment house with such toilets installed would have a thick vertical flue. Hori- zontal wastepipes with screw conveyors would connect with this flue. At one end there would be a silo containing a desiccant. Instead of flushing the toilet, the user would merely press a button and the excreta, which has fallen onto the desiccant, would be conveyed to the ver- tical flue where it would drop straight down into the compost tank in the basement. Here the excrela and the desiccant would be turned into humus. Crushed waste from debark- ing softwood was used as the desiccant which released a .
