Eighty per cent.of the public feels incapable of doing anyth- ing for peace. Many of us rely on our Canadian government to take the appropriate actions for Canadian security. However, not having a full understanding of the public’s position on these matters our government cannot act effectively. It takes:a lot of strength to stand up to the Ame- rican government, to tell them we are a sovereign nation, not a pawn in their strategic games. Our government needs to hear from us — and now, not soon. Peace activists are increa- singly becoming a pro-active versus re-active group. Even us delegates at the First Con- vention of the Canadian Peace Alliance (CPA) were in essen- ce preaching to the converted. Those of us who are active are constantly working towards bringing peace to the attention of that as yet uninvolved eighty per cent. We must revitalize our Strategy. A massive outreach pro- gramme is burgeoning between Citizens Ads for Peace and ‘Knock & Drop’/Radio Cam- paign organizations. Their major thrust being public education to issues of peace. The ‘Knock & Drop’ campaign is to mobilize public opinion to provoke go- vernment action. Leaflets with the same toll free number will accompany canvassers as they bring the issue of peace to the doors of one million Canadian homes, As a ‘Knock & Drop’ cam- palgner, one presents the leaflet at the door and encourages people to read through all the time emphasizing their right to respond on the issue of peace and make their concerns known to our elected representatives. Newspapers thus far have been excluded because of cost: in Kitchener/Waterloo a full-page advertisement costs $1500.00 whereas a thirtysecond radio spot can be done for $25.00. At this stage of the planning process, the question needing an answer is ‘What Issue will be used to crystalize public opin- ion,’ A large and exciting peace event in Canadian history .s eagerly being planned in Van- couver. The Vancouver Cen- tennial Peace Festival is hap- pening April 19-27, 1986 in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is to be an intensive nine-day programme on_ conferences, rallies, displays, and cultural events: all on the theme of peace. One of the highlights of the Peace Festival will be world-class Peace and Disar- mament Symposium on April 24-6. It will feature over twenty internationally renowned speakers on arms control and disarmament. Some of the in- ternational speakers will inc- lude: John Kenneth Galbraith (US), Petra Kelly (FRG), James Anderton (NZ), George Arbatov (USSR), Joan Rud- dock (UK). Canadian speakers will include Marion Dewar, Stephen Lewis, Hon. Douglas Roche, Kathleen Wallace- Deering and Bob White. _ The major proposals of the symposium will be presented to the third United Nations Con- ference on Disarmament later in 1986. Three Nobel laureates, Alfonso Garcia Robles (Mexi- co), Sean McBride (Ireland), and Dorothy Hodgkin (UK) will draft the Vancouver Peace Proposals derived from the Peace Festival. The Peace Festival will culminate on Sunday, April 27 with the annual Walk for Peace ending up in the 60,000 seat B.C. Place Stadium. The Peace Festival will be many things to many people. It will be a celebration of our common desire for peace and hopefully gather support from that eighty per cent who are as yet uncommited, Most im- portantly, the Centennial Peace Festival will send a powerfull message to world leaders of the urgency to end the arms race.
