American steel producers
have accused Finland along
with Sweden, Australia and
some third world countries of
unfair competition in the
States in a bid to clamp down
on imports from those coun-
tries. The producers hope the
American trade secretary will
take action if they can prove
that governments in the coun-
tries involved have been pro-
viding subsidies.

Finnish suppliers, who have
almost doubled their exports
to the US in the past year have,
however, said the charges are
groundless.

‘There is absolutely no rea-
son to impose import restric-
tions on Finnish steel,” said
Helge Haavisto, chairman of
the Rautaruukki steel firm.

“Accusations of dumping do
not stand up to closer inspec-
tion. We have had American
investigators visiting our firm
and they have admitted there is
no government subsidy for
steel firms here.”

were made by producers and
not the American government.
He did not think the US trade
secretary would take them seri-

More flights
to Helsinki

Finnair is to open a new diréct
route from Helsinki to Los An-
geles in the summer. There will
also be a separate flight to Los
Angeles which will stop over at
Seattle.

The airline has also an-
nounced an extra weekly flight
to London as well as Vienna,
when their summer schedule
